Influence of Treatment and Use of Farmyard Manure on Nitrogen Flows on the Organic Cattle Farm
This investigation assessed the effects of anaerobic and aerobic treatments on nitrogen losses and the fertilising effect of farm yard manure. The fate of nitrogen was investigated in three separate experiments: manure treatment, manure application, and fertilising effect. N-losses during manure treatment, application and fertiliser use were measured to be 15%, 9% 10% for the anaerobic treatment and 10%, 1%, 9% for the aerobic manure treatment, respectively for the three experiments.
About 5% of the nitrogen was found in harvested crops. The total N-loss of anaerobically and aerobically treated manure was determined to be 37% and 27% of the initial nitrogen content. It was concluded that during the process of handling farmyard manure, nitrogen losses occur mainly in the form of gaseous losses (80%) and thus are far in excess of nitrate leaching losses (20%).
